If it doesn't know for sure, it needs to default to the worst case
  2. StommePoes
    Feb 27 00:00
    but if a dev knows...
  3. zakim-robot
    Feb 27 00:00
[karlgroves] Yeah. We’re 100% DOM-aware. Our tests take into consideration all of the CSS, JS, and Images
  4. StommePoes
    Feb 27 00:00
that could be useful: ignore image loads
  5. zakim-robot
    Feb 27 00:04
[karlgroves] OK everyone have an awesome weekend
  6. jnurthen
    Feb 27 00:05

  10. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 03:52
@stevefaulkner: could you link aria-patterns on slack to a new channel?
  11. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 03:52
    On the Gitters that is
  12. jnurthen
    Feb 27 03:55
+1 to that. Slack does not exist to me.
  13. jnurthen
    Feb 27 03:55
And @MichielBijl why are you not asleep?
  14. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:02
Picking up the girlfriend at Schiphol as a surprise.
  15. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:02
So need to catch the train at 7AM GMT+1
  16. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:03
(I really hope my girlfriend isn't on Gitter though, that would ruin the surprise…)
  17. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:04
But just in case, hi sweetie!
  18. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:04
    =P
  19. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:11
    But isn't it like 5am?
  20. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:13
    Yeap, 5.13
  21. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:14
So it'll be a lot of coffee today, and I'll try to get some sleep in the train.
  22. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:14
Unless you have a really long walk to the station you are up really early.
  23. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:14
    I'm up still…
  24. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:14
    Oh.
  25. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:14
    More whisky then.
  26. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:14
Was up doing some work till 2. Some cleaning till 4. No point in sleeping now…
  27. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:14
    Good idea
  28. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:15
Aren't you out drinking beers somewhere?
  29. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:16
    I have kids.
  30. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:16
I am drinking wine at home.
  31. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:17
    10 minutes till bedtime.
  32. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:20
    Ah, kids…
  33. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:21
I have cats, but they don't mind if I occasionally leave for a couple of days.
  34. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:21
    Let alone a couple hours.
  35. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:22
Yeah. Cats are easy except for the mess they make. Bit like kids there.
  36. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:22
Yeah I need a house with a garden.
  37. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:22
Fertilise garden + no mess inside = profit
  38. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:23
Not sure cat crop is a prized fertilizer.
  39. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:24
Probably not. Probably also why I don't have a garden.
  40. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:27
I have one but I can't grow anything useful because I have too many big trees.
  41. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:27
Except for a lemon tree in my front yard. Never have to buy lemons.
  42. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:28
    That's a plus
  43. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:28
Yeah. Good for gin and tonics.
  44. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:28
I never have to buy cat crap
  45. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:29
Me neither. Have 2 kittens (well 5 month old cats now) who produce a ton of it.
  46. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:29
Nice, I have two two year olds and one nine year old.
  47. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:29
Four litter boxes to keep them busy.
  48. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:30
Jesus. That is a lot of litter boxes.
  49. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:31
You should have n+1 litter boxes where n is number of cats.
  50. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:31
That's for strictly indoor cats though. Not sure what the formula is with outdoor cats.
  51. jnurthen
    Feb 27 04:31
I figure 2 is enough. They seem to find them.
  52. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:32
Yeah I'm not sure why it is, but I ended up with four anyway.
  53. MichielBijl
    Feb 27 04:32
It's like the drink point thing, where you should really have more spread around the house. I just have one drink fountain for them, they seem to be rather pleased with that.

    Goodmorning all :D

@StommePoes About tenon.io and newbies: I agree. As a newbie with testing on accessibility, all the warnings and errors were helpful to me. I NEEDED to know about empty links (ie: picture inside a link...), title tags that were the same as the link text,...
  56. StommePoes
    Feb 27 10:07
Sophie yeah Karl did that deliberately (set the defaults to 0 and 0).
  57. StommePoes
    Feb 27 10:07
You can make an account and change those settings though. You would never use 0 and 0 if you were using Tenon along with your linter etc for a build.
  58. sophieschoice
    Feb 27 10:08
yeah, might do that in the future :D
  59. sophieschoice
    Feb 27 10:09
Right now I just need to know all the things :P to get better and to get rid of a few bad habits/practices
  60. StommePoes
    Feb 27 10:10
Of course it's nicest when wherever you're reading, there some kind of mark that says "this is a hard and fast rule!" and "this is one of those judgement calls things"
  61. StommePoes
    Feb 27 10:10
I don't think I've run into that in any one place.
  62. StommePoes
    Feb 27 10:10
Just something you go through over time.
  63. StommePoes
    Feb 27 10:10
Also apologies to @muan, who was unhappy I called her a dude :P

I need to find an ascii cat smile... =^.^=

@MichielBijl I can set up a pipe, but it is limited to 30 msgs a day. in order to setup an unlimited pipe need to cough up $49/month for 5 pipes. I got the pipe for this channel for nix by selling my soul via https://www.paciellogroup.com/blog/2015/07/anybody-can-be-an-a11y-slacker/#sameroom
  67. jnurthen
    Feb 27 17:31
I guess the question then becomes whether to move things over to gitter or leave them on slack. Or I guess option 3 is to find someone else who still has a soul left that they can sell.
  68. jnurthen
    Feb 27 17:37
There are folks who can't use slack (restrictive firewalls). Does gitter have the same issue for anyone?

One of the hardest things to do is name things. I’m working on a new version of okayNav, and I’m uncertain what to call the hidden menu that contains all of the items that no longer fit in the primary menu. I’m thinking, I can call the primary menu “menu” and the hidden menu “overflow menu”. Does that make sense?
  70. jnurthen
    Feb 27 18:05
I think that makes sense to a developer. Not sure it makes sense to an end user. Don't have any better suggestions for you though.
  71. jonathantneal
    Feb 27 18:54
    @sophieschoice, I like it.
  72. sophieschoice
    Feb 27 18:57
@jonathantneal , at the moment I use footnotes for my websites and I use the code of Simon Collison. You can see it how it works here: http://colly.com/comments/redesigning_the_undesigned/
  73. sophieschoice
    Feb 27 18:59
he also uses a bit of jQuery, and that's why I was looking for another solution. Because in my opinion it is not needed for a simple operation as anchor links (which is how you code footnotes)
  74. jonathantneal
    Feb 27 19:09
@sophieschoice, it uses jQuery to generate the numbers? I’m not sure what I should be comparing, is all.
  75. sophieschoice
    Feb 27 19:11
no, for scrolling. Which is why I find it a bit overdone.
  76. sophieschoice
    Feb 27 19:11
Because if the jQuery-file can't be loaded or is broken, the anhor links won't work.
  77. jonathantneal
    Feb 27 19:12
Unfortunately, I don’t get the scrolling effect on on the colly site. Not sure why. I do see the scrollto class on the footnote anchor.

    Feb 27 19:13
@jnurthen, thanks for your feedback, btw. I feel the same way. Overflow is the best description I can come up with that doesn’t specify a particular appearance for those items.
  79. sophieschoice
    Feb 27 20:03
btw, are there any other recommended slack channels or channels on gitter?

[kevinchao89] Are there ways to make nested list interaction more accessible for screen readers?
    1. Tried setting name or description on <ul>, but when using next/previous list navigation commands: aria-label, labeled by, describedby were not read by screen readers.
    2. The different bullet types that indicates the level in <li> are spoken by screen readers as black bullet, hollow bullet, etc. Hiding the bullet type with aria-hidden and role="presentation" didn't work. It'd be more meaningful to have the level reported (e.g. L1, L2, etc.).
    3. Screen readers only have quick-nav keys for next/previous list/listitem, but is there a method to navigate to first <li> in <ul>?
Recommendations on above is greatly appreciated...Thanks!

    @sophieschoice, for a11y chat? I haven’t found them. I couldn’t find any until I found this room.
  82. sophieschoice
    Feb 27 20:51
@jonathantneal no, for webdesign in general. Or usability :)

[kevinchao89] Re: overflow label. We've used more options as accessibility label

    Feb 27 22:18
just found two Dutch mailinglists :D, about accessible Android and NVDA! #lifelonglearning
  85. sophieschoice
    Feb 27 22:19
It seems accessibility is really getting some attention in NL/BE. Woohoo! A few years ago that was quite different.

    Feb 27 23:17
👆in reference to having multiple channels. I already am subscribed to a million and 1 mailing lists, atomising a11y discussion via segregated channels is not my bag
  88. stevefaulkner
    Feb 27 23:19
But that is just me, anyone can set up a gitter channel and it's available to anyone with a GitHub account to read/write and anybody to read

Thanks for this room, @stevefaulkner if you made it or had a part in its making.
