What fresh hell is THIS now? - Patrick Lauke
  1. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 00:16
    [bkardell] that's bananas jake
  2. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 00:59
  3. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:01
@MichielBijl I prefer the current; mostly because I can visually tell when I'm quickly scrolling from one to another
  4. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:02
    Between patterns you mean?
  5. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:02
    yes
  6. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:02
    Okay
  7. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:02
What if it had headings like in HTML 5.1 spec?
  8. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:03
'cause I can just steal that stylesheet :P
  9. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:04
what headings exactly are you talking about
  10. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 01:04
[cordelia] I actually prefer the first one!
  11. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:05
    So blue rectangle stuff
  12. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:05
    Or purple, whatever it is
  13. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:05
when it comes to design, I trust @cordelia's opinion over my own
  14. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:06
    Thanks Cordelia
  15. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:06
but I do also like the blurple headings
  16. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 01:06
[cordelia] I prefer the rawgit version personally because I feel like the descriptions have more space to breath. I agree the table blocks make it really easy to tell sections apart in the current version, but I also find the tables harder to read because the text is all smushed in that second cell.
  17. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:06
@garcialo, yeah me too, but interested in all opinions :)
  18. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:06
Yeah, and I don't feel it's really tabular data.
  19. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:07
    Headings seem more fitting anyway.
  20. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:07
    @MichielBijl I definitely agree there
  21. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 01:07
[cordelia] Yeah, those should be headings. Also it’s unclear to me why some of the first columns are grey and some of them are white?
  22. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:07
It might be worth to look into Luis' point of them having to be more recognisable.
  23. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:07
Hang one, need to get off the train and find a place to sit.
  24. garcialo @garcialo hangs one.
  25. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 01:08
[cordelia] +1 —> I’d stick to headings + blocks of text below them, and make the headings more prominent. I like how the “Note” text stands out, so perhaps something similar with the blurple.
  26. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:09

    blurple

  27. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:09
oh, of course it does that
  28. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 01:09
    [cordelia] Does what?
  29. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:09
in gitter, it turned it into a headingish thing
  30. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 01:09
    [cordelia] Oh interesting.
  31. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 01:10
[cordelia] Signing off for the weekend… See some of you at CSUN. Have fun with the blurple headings
  32. MichielBijl @MichielBijl hangs Luis
  33. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:24
@Cordelia, are you at the tweetup?
  34. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:24
We definitely need to turn those headings into something blurple
  35. MichielBijl @MichielBijl found the only chair in the entire airport that is next to a power outlet.
  36. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:25
are you sure it's not an outlet sticker?
  37. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:26
It just gave me a shock; so pretty sure
  38. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:27
And I still have three beers
  39. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:27
And just 7 hours left to wait
  40. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:27
    Should be fine
  41. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:27
my flight leaves on Sunday morning 8:30 CDT
  42. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:28
I'll arrive at around noon local on Sunday
  43. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:30
We should grab a beer when you arrive
  44. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:31
Unless you're one of those people that don't drink around noon of course.
  45. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:31
    I don't drink around noon
  46. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:31
    ...or any time really
  47. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:31
well, I don't drink alcohol; I'll drink other stuff
  48. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:31
    Not even coffee?
  49. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:31
    no coffee
  50. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:31
    Ah, right
  51. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:31
    Tea?
  52. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:31
    usually just water
  53. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:32
    maybe root beer
  54. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:32
    shake
  55. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:32
    lemonade
  56. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:32
    usually not tea
  57. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:32
We can get some shakes :)
  58. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:32
    I try and avoid caffeine
  59. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:32
    sure thing
  60. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:32
Something with strawberry, pears, banana's maybe.
  61. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:33
    that would work
  62. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:33
there's decent variety in the area
  63. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:33
Good, would be nice to meet up regardless of type of beverage really :P
  64. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:34
    definitely
  65. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:34
although, after that I'll likely be self-sequestered until I finish my talk
  66. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:35
    that's pretty much all I'm doing tonight/tomorrow
  67. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:35
    Fair enough
  68. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:35
they decided to dump a bunch of work on me today
  69. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:35
I have Monday to explore the area.
  70. garcialo
    Mar 19 01:35
    ah, I'm working Monday/Tuesday =p
  71. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:35
And I think some folks are meeting up on Sunday to do drinks.
  72. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 01:35
    Workshop on Tuesday
  73. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 02:39
[cordelia] @MichielBijl, are you going to the design workshop?
  74. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 02:39
    Yeap
  75. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 02:40
[cordelia] Me too! And probably the tweetup later in the week
  76. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 02:40
    Nice!
  77. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 02:40
I'm going to the Tweetup too :)
  78. simevidas
    Mar 19 04:39
If I put some text (like "error") inside (the content of) the ::before pseudo-element of some list item, will be accessible?
  79. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:40
    no
  80. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:40
It won't be read by assisstive technology
  81. simevidas
    Mar 19 04:42
hm, in my instance, the ::before text is transformed into an icon (via icon font ligatures) - yea, crazy I know - so I'm not sure how to convey that information to AT
  82. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:42
Use an svg image with an aria-label
  83. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:42
    that would work
  84. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:42
    what @MichielBijl said
  85. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:42
Or just, you know, text, usually works =P
  86. simevidas
    Mar 19 04:42
    e.g. <li data-icon="error">Some item</li>
  87. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:42
yeah, I was going to say use text
  88. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:43
    <li class="error">Error: Some item</li>
  89. simevidas
    Mar 19 04:43
    ok
  90. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:44
    Or if it's a list of error: <section><h2>Your page contains 11 errors</h2><ul><li>…</li></ul></section>
  91. simevidas
    Mar 19 04:44
(wasn't sure how to combine the "error" with the other text; colon looks good)
  92. jnurthen
    Mar 19 04:45
Not saying it is the best way but the ::before content should be included in the accessible name calculation. Whether it will get read or not depends on how well the browser+AT conform to the specs.
  93. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:46
VO supports it, just not caret navigation for example.
  94. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:46
    IIRC
  95. jnurthen
    Mar 19 04:47
FF does too. Probably won't work with IE due to it being ancient and essentially desupported.
  96. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:48
    I recalled correctly.
  97. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:49
I am soooo gonna sleep on the plane.
  98. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:49
    hah
  99. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:49
Just did about 4-5 hours of APG edits :P
  100. jnurthen
    Mar 19 04:49
    If you are lucky.
  101. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:49
    Lucky how?
  102. jnurthen
    Mar 19 04:50
Sleep. I can't sleep on planes.
  103. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:50
I can sleep during take off…
  104. jnurthen
    Mar 19 04:50
    Lucky
  105. jnurthen
    Mar 19 04:51
Have a good flight and enjoy San Diego.
  106. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:51
I'm still stuck here another 4 hours
  107. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:51
    But yeah, thanks :P
  108. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:51
    are you not going @jnurthen?
  109. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:52
    He is
  110. jnurthen
    Mar 19 04:52
I am but don't get there till Tuesday.
  111. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:52
    ah
  112. jnurthen
    Mar 19 04:53
Going to be chilly. Highs are only in the high 60s for most of the week. :(
  113. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:53
    That's pretty good
  114. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:54
    But I'm used to 3-6º C
  115. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:54
ack, I'm going to need to dress warmly
  116. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:55
Hmm, I have two beers left
  117. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:55
Should I trash them or put them in my check-in luggage?
  118. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:55
    trash
  119. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:55
    Yeah that's what I figured.
  120. jnurthen
    Mar 19 04:55
    Drink.
  121. jnurthen
    Mar 19 04:55
    :)
  122. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:55
    heh
  123. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:56
    Prff
  124. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:56
    I don't feel like drinking
  125. jnurthen
    Mar 19 04:56
    Find a random and donate.
  126. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:57
I would if it was night time, but offering people beer at 6 in the morning isn't really my style :P
  127. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:58
I'm sure you can find someone
  128. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:58
    make a sign
  129. jnurthen
    Mar 19 04:59
Now if you were wearing the onesie it would be a different story.
  130. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 04:59
    True
  131. garcialo
    Mar 19 04:59
go put it on and make a sign
  132. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 05:00
You guys are confusing me :P
  133. jnurthen
    Mar 19 05:00
At least put them on top of a trash can.
  134. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 05:00
    That's usually my girlfriends job
  135. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 05:00
I'll put them next to the power outlet
  136. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 05:01
Woohoo, secured a ticket to CSS Day in Amsterdam =D
  137. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 10:02
[dean] Nice! Not a coder so it doesn’t seem that suitable for me, I wish there were more accessibility folks at (affordable) UX conferences though!
  138. sophieschoice
    Mar 19 11:35
Wanna go to CSS Day as well, but it is a lot of money :(
  139. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 14:18
[heydon] Okay, so it looks like Safari on OSX does not display alt text for broken images. Is this well known?
  140. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 14:30
    [karlgroves] si
  141. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 20:28
[hmig] There’s a fix in for it :)
  142. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 20:28
    Oui
  143. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 20:28
    [hmig] @heydon:
  144. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 20:28
    For Safari?
  145. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 20:28
    [hmig] oops, nope … chrome
  146. zakim-robot
    Mar 19 20:29
    [hmig] damn, safari too?!
  147. jnurthen
    Mar 19 20:31
    At LAX?
  148. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 20:35
    Yeap :)
  149. MichielBijl
    Mar 19 20:35
    Waiting for customs
  150. metzessible
    Mar 19 23:40
I finally finished some initial videos covering how to take an unformatted Word file and turn it into an ISO 14289 (PDF/UA) compliant PDF: https://youtu.be/BeFt-Qa3mjM?list=PLmfVOnJxeSEXsEKv2i20nYMHYuFEcl4fO
