  3. StommePoes
    Mar 31 09:05
I still need to use easychirp if I want to add alt
  4. StommePoes
    Mar 31 09:05
accessible images... if you use a mobile phone of one of 2 operating systems
  5. StommePoes
    Mar 31 09:05
so, eagerly awaiting the spread to the rest
  6. @StommePoes thanks. He also sent me an email. Former boss of mine, actually. Only skimmed it and didn't see much in there. Will read more carefully when I get the chance.

[karlgroves] @jkva @StommePoes @michiel After a quick walk around Amsterdam I see what you mean. The German reference to the Dutch being kassekopfe is entirely unfounded.
  8. @karlgroves Dutch cheese best cheese
  9. @karlgroves You've been in AMS before, no?
  10. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 10:52
    [karlgroves] Nope. First time
  11. Sweet. Enjoy =) try some local craft beer
  12. There's a great pub called "In de Wildeman"
  13. But not sure where you are right now
  14. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 10:53
[karlgroves] You mean Dutch beer isn’t just Heinekin and Amstel?
  15. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 10:53
[karlgroves] I think they refer to this as city center?
  16. Heheh. "What do you see around you"
    "Bicycles and high tourists"
    "Yeah, city center"
  17. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 10:54
    [karlgroves] lol
  18. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 10:55
[karlgroves] TIL there are two types of coffee shops. One type offers coffee.
  19. Surely you knew this? Some offer both, too =)
  20. Ok so I'm guessing you're close to the Sexmuseum. Head south...
  21. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 10:56
[karlgroves] Yes. I knew. I expected both to offer good coffee! ;) It didn’t take me long before I walked past a group of young American girls huddled around a joint like they were getting away with something
  22. Haha
  23. So edgy!
  24. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 10:57
    [karlgroves] Here’s where I am https://goo.gl/maps/4RLXLdhW9V62
  25. Ah, the area to your west is nice
  26. Lots of little art stores & stuff
  27. If you're looking for good MJ, "Dampkring" is a good coffee shop
  28. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 11:00
[karlgroves] googles for how far away Dampkring is
  29. I'm still expecting a good talk tomorrow! ;)
  30. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 11:01
    [karlgroves] shit
  31. StommePoes
    Mar 31 11:20
And we're hoping to be able to have a quick drink afterwards as well
  32. StommePoes
    Mar 31 11:20
however it's possible it doesn't work out due to the usual what happens after conferences, so we ought to have a backup plan to get you some good, locally-baked stroopwafels
  33. Yeah, not gonna drag Scotch&Stroopwafels all the way there for nothing
  34. StommePoes
    Mar 31 11:20
    locally-baked in Sliedrecht
  35. StommePoes
    Mar 31 11:20
    4.20 for 1 pack!
  36. Whelp, there goes this month's mortgage ;)
  37. StommePoes
    Mar 31 11:21
You can buy a whole loaf of bread for 95 cents but a pack stroopwafels is expensive
  38. THey're good though
  39. SOmetimes the supermarket has a guy making them in the store, the smell alone gives you the beetus
  40. StommePoes
    Mar 31 11:22
BTW Karl be aware Amsterdam is like NYC: not an excellent representation of the country it's in
  41. StommePoes
    Mar 31 11:22
"oh mah beetus is shore actin up today!"
  42. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 11:23

[karlgroves] “Karl be aware Amsterdam is like NYC”

NYC is a perfect representation of the US. NYC thinks it is the center of the universe and so does the US. ;)

Yes, I’ve seen plenty of pictures of the rest of the Netherlands and really want to explore other places. Wish I had more time.

  43. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 11:24
Karl, you're welcome to crash here tomorrow ;)
  44. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 11:25
[karlgroves] You have a cat though, right?
  45. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 11:25
    THree.
  46. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 11:25
[karlgroves] I’ll pass. I’m super allergic to cats
  47. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 11:25
So all your stuff will smell like cats and cat shit and stuff
  48. StommePoes
    Mar 31 11:26
Karl you'll need to check out Marco Zehe's cats, they're basically cat labradoodles so his allergic wife could have cats... see how you react to them
  49. StommePoes
    Mar 31 11:26
    (they DO have fur)
  50. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 11:27
[karlgroves] My ex-wife had a hairless cat. Once you adjust to how weird they look they’re actually pretty cool and did not trigger my allergies.
  51. StommePoes

  54. StommePoes
    Mar 31 11:31
The worst thing about hairless cats is how much they want you to pet them. (shivver)
  55. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 11:33
    [karlgroves] lol
  56. StommePoes
    Mar 31 11:35
I did a talk on the Sphinx search engine and decorated my slides with funky photos of those things. People remembered the slides months later ("it had those creepy cats!")
  57. zakim-robot

  62. A man in Laholm, Hallan County in Sweden was reported to police because he farted after the woman he was with denied to have sex with him.

She reported the incident to the local police saying that his “revenge fart” disturbed her peace of mind.

The man and the woman, whose names were not released to the public, had talked of having sex in a different occasion, but they are not in a relationship. According to the woman, the man visited her in her house with the desire to have sex with her. When she refused to indulge him, he simply farted and left.

“It smelled very bad in my flat,” the woman said in her police report.

The police spokesperson said that they had an obligation to check if criminal actions were involved. But the incident was not investigated further. The news just made it to the local papers.

    rëvënge fårt?

  63. That's approaching "Florida man" material
  64. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:13
    [karlgroves] rëvënge fårt FTW
  65. “It smelled very bad in my flat,” the woman said in her police report.
  66. comedy gold
  67. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:15
But so this was apparently a very accessible fart
  68. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:15
    so what's the issue
  69. Not accessible for people who can't smell, I guess?
  70. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:15
    no olfactory-impaired were present
  71. Although a good fart can be kinda chewy
  72. Someday I'll regret this all being logged
  73. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:17
[karlgroves] If it had an audio alternative to the smell, I’d call it accessible
  74. "So, mr Van Achterberg, we at The Paciello Group take ourselves very seriously. We found some unacceptable things you've said in these gitter logs, we can't hire people like you, they destroy our work ethic"
"I swear Mike I didn't mean it that way ;O;"

  77. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:19
Someone should've taken a photo of him in the polo
  78. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:19
[karlgroves] Feh that’s what Photoshop is for
  79. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:20
Meh, but then you might as well photoshop him into a Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops
  80. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:20
The polo in real life is more extreme
  81. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:21
goddamn this website's keyboarding is so very fucking annoying http://9292.nl/
  82. Yeah, I've asked them to fix it :(
  83. Even directed them to the spec
  84. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:21
It was worse when they had the cookie warning popup and there was no way to get to it at all. I bitched on twitter and a few weeks later they moved focus to it, but the rest of the site is still sad pandas
  85. From Fabrique / Q42 I would really expect better
  86. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:21
People have offerered to fix it FOR them
  87. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:21
    for FREE.
  88. I'll drive over there to rëvënge fårt
  89. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:23
[karlgroves] Forget a11y lawsuits! rëvënge fårts!
  90. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:24
I could honestly see that working better.
  91. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:24
lawsuits take time and money. rëvënge fårten are quick and dirty

  103. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:30
[karlgroves] That reminds me, I need to tell them the proper spelling of rëvënge fårt
  104. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:30
    You mean...
  105. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:30
it's getting added to a slide?
  106. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:31

  107. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:31
[karlgroves] With an asterisk to cite Job as the source. ;)
  108. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:33
I don't need my other half referred to as the source of farts
  109. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:33
    not publicly
  110. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:33

[karlgroves] > “I don't need my other half referred to as the source of farts”

    Also going on my slides.

    14:21 <jkva> From Fabrique / Q42 I would really expect better
  113. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:35
They don't employ developers, only designers.
  114. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:35
They always want to one up each other.
  115. =D
  116. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:35
No designer uses a keyboard, prrfff
  117. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:36
If a designer knew there were keyboard shortcuts for things in photoshop, sketch, etc, they'd be way too productive.
  118. I've been to Q42, they have capable folk
  119. So I'm disappointed
  120. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:36
I tried to get a job at Fabrique but I sucked so they didn't hire me
  121. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:37
In fact, nobody would touch me with a 10-ft pole. I guess my current employer just didn't know that.
  122. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:37
14:36 <jkva> I've been to Q42, they have capable folk
  123. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:37
Maybe they should have some disabled folk ;)
  124. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:37
All these web bureaus could use some disabled folk
  125. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:37
Bram has some choice things to say about Michiel's former employer...
  126. I'm biased so I am hoping it's just ignorance, but that's also no excuse for decent web standard compliant development
  127. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:37
@StommePoes, maybe you should write a “You don't want to hire me” of your own.
  128. rëvënge fårt should totally be on a slide
  129. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:38
Michiel I don't have to-- nobody wanted to hire me because it was obvious I wasn't good at much. Except ranting, and nobody wants a wailing banshee witch on their team
  130. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:38
Sitepoint forums on the other hand seem to like wailing banshee witch
  131. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:38
[karlgroves] That just gave me an idea for a meetup. No talks or any of that, just a “Get to know differently abled people"
  132. Although iirc fårt == "travel, fare" from "vaart"
  133. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:39
    yeah it does
  134. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:39
    revenge travel
  135. Yeah our role=drinks a11y meetup is similar
  136. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:39
[karlgroves] hahaha Revenge Travel. Watch out or I’ll take a trip somewhere else!
  137. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:39
    fjärta
  138. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:39
that's the taken-from-english version of fart in Swedish
  139. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:39
That just gave me an idea for a meetup. No talks or any of that, just a “Get to know differently farts"
  140. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:39
fisa seems to be the swedish-swedish one
  141. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:40
Role=drinks was a one-off with a follow-up. It happened to have some blinks who like whisky
  142. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:40
however we may start an actual meetup-meetup with specific a11y-ish related stuff
  143. Fart quality is linear correlated with the volume of @StommePoes yelling at me
  144. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:41
I notice pretty much all disabled people I know are techies
  145. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:41
    So I'm already pretty biased
  146. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:41
[karlgroves] Are you talking fart quality or fårt quality? I can see both applying
  147. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:42
I'm going to give a talk sometime in the next few months at DomCode about digital/web accessibility and I was putting together 'personas' and I'm looking at them going "that's not very diverse, they're all developers"
  148. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:42
This is getting too smelly for me, I think I might take the next ausfart out of here…
  149. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:42
"fårt" gives it that sofisticated Volvo/Saab air with a hint of IKEA
  150. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:42
I was at IKEA on Monday; didn't like it
  151. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:43
Michiel that's because you didn't go to the Man Room
  152. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:43
We vowed to not return unless we had a list of stuff we really needed.
  153. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:43
If they have those in NL yet
  154. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:43
    Should've read the man pages
  155. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:43
[karlgroves] Job, we can put our wives in the same room and create a singularity of yelling.
  156. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:43
Ever since they ditched whatever goofy font they were using for Verdana, I've been pro-IKEA.
  157. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:43
    [karlgroves] ducks
  158. Heheh
  159. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:44
All the designistas whined and wailed while those of us who appreciate readable text cheered.
  160. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:44
    IT'S THURSDAY ALREADY?!!!
  161. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:44
Yeah, tomorrow is scotch and stroopwafels
  162. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:44
    Shees
  163. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:44
    Yeah short week
  164. Bank holiday ftw
  165. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:44
It feels like I lost a couple of days this week
  166. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:44
Karl, did you know we get two easters and two christmasses?
  167. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:45
    Our workweek here started Tuesday.
  168. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:45
I know I lost a couple days last week, but that was because I was on a whisky diet.
  169. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:45
    We also get koningsdag
  170. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:45
[karlgroves] Disappointed I can’t get stroopwafels and MJ in the same place here. Get it together, Dutchies. I’m sure I’m not the first to think of this.
  171. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:45
    Oh yeah.
  172. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:45
    MJ?
  173. Mary Jane
  174. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:45
And the day the Jesus returns to the Heavens, plus Pearson for some reason makes the day after a required holiday too.

  177. THat;s nat'l I think @StommePoes
  178. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:46
    Hemelvaart? Nope.
  179. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:46
That's no free day in the States that I know of.
  180. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:46
My aunts and grandma would go to church
  181. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:46
    That's about it.
  182. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:46
Not even saturday and sunday :P
  183. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:47
Sunday Easter, but no Monday Easter or Jesus-Goes-to-Heaven days off.
  184. zakim-robot
    Mar 31 12:47
[karlgroves] Employer discretion for that one. Some do, some don't.
  185. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:47
Also Good Friday usually isn't a day off, but schools might be.
  186. Hrm Hemelvaart is May 5th
  187. That's liberation day
  188. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:47
    Liberation plus the jesus.
  189. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:47
    Double holiday.
  190. MichielBijl
    Mar 31 12:47
But 'Muricans have 4th of july
  191. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:47
    True.
  192. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:48
I have super fond memories of the 4th
  193. Like almost getting shot?
  194. StommePoes
    Mar 31 12:48

  295. jnurthen

You know. I never even think of sushi as being a Japanese word (of course I know it is). I always use a slightly less commonly used usage example where the word may not actually be in the dictionary but is commonly understood.

or as my father used to say, horse doovers... the consequences of taking in a word
  297. StommePoes
    Mar 31 14:40
There are many times where a newspaper or magazine article italicises a foreign loanword
  298. StommePoes
    Mar 31 14:41
and in those cases, I still wouldn't wrap a lang around them, but it's curious that I'd wrap possibly an <i> around them (as it seems italicised purely for typographic reasons, not sure)
  299. jnurthen
    Mar 31 14:43
    Yeah. I agree.
  300. jnurthen
    Mar 31 14:44
Normally switching pronunciation engine in a screen reader for things like that would decrease the user experience unless the user happens to speak both languages.

huh, no, it seems it never had the u+bar
  310. jnurthen
    Mar 31 14:51
I guess Dutch pronunciation is different then. So adding a lang attribute would make it more confusing as it would change to native pronunciation rules.
  311. jnurthen
    Mar 31 14:52
Perhaps the rule for language of parts should be change if there is a whole sentence but not for single words. For cases between Make a judgment call.
