What fresh hell is THIS now? - Patrick Lauke
  1. Yay code reviews
  2. // Most browsers dont do the pointer if the <a tag doesnt have a href a { cursor: pointer }

  3. Me: "Use a button for that"
    Coworker: "<button href="">?"
    Me : "No..." :worried:

    @simong I don't know if there's a specific mathmlish way of doing that, but maybe a figcaption+figure?
  9. StommePoes
    Apr 06 09:41
@simong you could try asking @pkra too
  10. I heard my name.
  11. what's up @StommePoes @simong
  12. ah, see it now.
  13. Yes, there is.
  14. MathML has a special labeling system

woohoo. We did a call once to @rodneyrehm and he appeared in a swirl of fire. Can you do that too?
  16. Hm.. no gif support?
  17. @StommePoes that's the best I can do, I'm afraid. Louise is the best btw.

  23. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 10:54
[rodneyrehm] I’m about to head into the next meeting, but what’s the problem @StommePoes?
  24. sophieschoice @sophieschoice laughs about the posted gifs.
  25. @rodneyrehm: There was no problem, just your summoning theatrics were brought up as an example ;)
  26. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 11:36
    [rodneyrehm] ah, ok
  27. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 11:36
[rodneyrehm] sorry to have disappointed ;)
  28. You can still vanish theatrically :P

    It was a rhyme
  39. MichielBijl
    Apr 06 11:45
    little star -> bar
  40. Yes, I understood
  41. MichielBijl
    Apr 06 11:45
    My sarcasme meter is broken.
  42. I mean, when dealing with 'star', I would rhyme 'far', not 'bar'. You might have a problem ;)

Wouldn't a disappearance be more effective if it was in an inaccessible cloud of smoke?
  45. a list of divs within a div, each div having the class disabled so that the empty as in the div get hover:not-allowed .

Like they do it on purpose. And then I am the person complaining when I ask why it's not a ul with li containing buttons

  46. Not sure what else to do though, I mean, this is what code reviews are for
  47. powrsurg
    Apr 06 14:09
Was there any justification for such, or was it just a typical "this is what they said to do on stackoverflow" type thing?
  48. Not really thinking it through, I guess. We all make mistakes
  49. works-on-my-machine syndrome, I think

I'm trying to get my team more used to doing a11y stuff. Getting some headway with it, but sometimes they're going about the long way for things. Design it first to work the way they thought it should, then add in a11y after. So there have been times where we should have a <button> with <img> inside that instead get <img tabindex="0"> on them.

    Apr 06 14:14
I truly don't understand why so many third-party things have <a> without an href
  52. powrsurg
    Apr 06 14:14
at least I can vaguely understand <a href="#">
  53. I think it's just lack of knowledge, and not knowing what that breaks
  54. "It works for me"
  55. The web's lenient parsing nature allows a lot of this. Most programming language parsers would've dopeslapped you
  56. We tried to fix it with XHTML once :P
  57. powrsurg
    Apr 06 14:17
Yeah, I remember getting my own site running XHTML 1.1
  58. powrsurg
    Apr 06 14:17
served it with the right MIME type too

    Apr 06 14:18
I don't recall if I ever updated that. I really should update my personal site ... make it mobile friendly, probably has some a11y bugs I never accounted for when I set it up like a decade ago ...

[newtron] has anybody seen stats on which screen reader/browser/os combos read text-transform: uppercase as individual letters vs words?
  63. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 15:20
[newtron] also, same question but with font-feature-settings: "c2sc", "smcp”; =D

[marcysutton] @fstorr we are having an accessibility camp in Seattle in January 2017 =D
  67. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 16:07
    [marcysutton] Hi @teleject!!
  68. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 16:26
[fstorr] @marcysutton: Yes! Any details yet? Because budget planning for next year, etc.
  69. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 16:27
[marcysutton] We are in early stages of planning, but it’s looking like a single-track, single day conference on Saturday, January 28.
  70. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 16:27
    [marcysutton] Potentially with side workshops.
  71. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 16:29
[marcysutton] The goal is to make it very affordable to attend. The biggest budget items for you would be transportation to Seattle and lodging.
  72. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 16:32
    [teleject] Hi, @marcysutton!
  73. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 16:32
[teleject] @fstorr Accessibility Summit will be in Sept. 6-7
  74. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 16:33
[teleject] We have a handful of speakers lined up, but haven't "officially" announced
  75. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 17:10
[fstorr] @marcysutton: Cool! My only input is that I’d much prefer it on a weekday so it’s part of my work week. Weekends are family time. Totally understand if I’m an outlier and that it works better at the weekend.
  76. zakim-robot
    Apr 06 17:11
[fstorr] @teleject: Thanks for the info ;)
  77. MichielBijl
    Apr 06 17:40
    @fstorr, that's my feeling too.
  78. MichielBijl
    Apr 06 17:40
But I can't attend, so ignore me :P

I guess the new Windows 10 build that came out today included a new Accessibility tree view for Edge

    Apr 06 18:53
[marcysutton] Thanks for the input @fstorr, that is important feedback!

    Apr 06 22:37
@powrsurg yeah I wanna try it
  82. jnurthen
    Apr 06 22:51
I also want to try the Developer View in Narrator

    Apr 06 22:52
looks like an interesting concept... no idea how long will have to wait for Win 10 though
