3. whew; relieved my talks got accepted
4. I mean, it would have been embarrassing if they hadn't
5. James Nurthen
@jnurthen
Nov 03 01:55
What are you presenting?
6. I'm doing an aria 1.1 one (including apg). Decided not to submit an oracle related one this year as no one ever turns up to them.
7. luis garcia
@garcialo
Nov 03 02:17
yeah, doing company-related talks is useless
8. we're doing two
9. that's how you do it

[blindwiz] Hello All! I am new to this slack team. I hope to help and learn as much as I can.
11. luis garcia
@garcialo
Nov 03 02:22
welcome!
12. what do you wish to learn?
13. zakim-robot
@zakim-robot
Nov 03 02:24
[blindwiz] I'm a software engineer that happens to be blind. I am not sure fully what I want to learn. I already know quite a lot, but there are always to grow.
14. [blindwiz] I mean there are always places to grow in.
15. luis garcia
@garcialo
Nov 03 02:25
so true
16. zakim-robot
@zakim-robot
Nov 03 02:25
[blindwiz] I figure the day say I know everything, that is the day I just became really stupid. :)
17. luis garcia
@garcialo
Nov 03 02:25
tonight, for instance, I am continuing on my quest to make the perfect bowl of oatmeal
18. zakim-robot
@zakim-robot
Nov 03 02:27
[blindwiz] Awe, I'm always in search of the perfect oatmeal configuration.
19. luis garcia
@garcialo
Nov 03 02:28
made it in a rice cooker for the first time tonight; it's okay so far
20. ah crap, I forgot the salt; that must be why it's a little odd
21. James Nurthen
@jnurthen
Nov 03 02:31
My rice cooker is too "smart" for oatmeal. :(
22. luis garcia
@garcialo
Nov 03 02:31
how so?
23. I'm really digging the consistency; this branch will definitely be iterated upon
24. zakim-robot
@zakim-robot
Nov 03 02:36
[blindwiz] hhmm, I've never made oatmeal in the slow cooker.
25. [blindwiz] I'll have to try it out this weekend.
26. luis garcia
@garcialo
Nov 03 02:37
let us know how it goes
27. zakim-robot

28. James Nurthen
@jnurthen
Nov 03 02:41
Fuzzy logic messes it up. Also often get a messy boil over.
29. For oatmeal use a cheap rice cooker.
30. luis garcia
@garcialo
Nov 03 02:43
I inherited mine, but I suspect it's not cheap. the friends I got it from eat rice all the time
31. James Nurthen
@jnurthen
Nov 03 02:50
Cheap was the wrong word. Simple.
32. luis garcia
@garcialo
Nov 03 02:52
sounds like your rice cooker is over engineered

[johnkmcnabb] Has anyone ever given out virtual accessibility awards at work? I'm thinking it could help draw attention to successes, like when people upgrade standards or processes to be more accessible (something more than the daily grind). Does anyone see a downside in this? #awards
74. James Nurthen
@jnurthen
Nov 03 14:15
We give real awards. Can you find budget to get an actual trophy? Creates awareness as folks ask about them when they see them.
75. zakim-robot
@zakim-robot
Nov 03 14:20
[johnkmcnabb] An actual trophy, that's cool. What kind of figure is on it?
76. [beth] @johnkmcnabb I think that’s an awesome idea. I’m going to see if I can do that at my place of employment.
77. James Nurthen
@jnurthen
Nov 03 14:33
It is curved glass. We have some Braille etched into it and then some text. Ironically the color contrast of the text is really bad!
78. But we also provide an electronic version as it can take a while to ship the awards especially internationally.
79. zakim-robot
@zakim-robot
Nov 03 14:40
[johnkmcnabb] @jamesn That's a great idea.

[karlgroves] My wife is Director of HR at a large accounting firm. She buys gift cards for $100 a piece and allows any of the staff to “WOW” each other for going above & beyond. The prize is one of those gift cards.
81. [karlgroves] I think it is a great idea. People like to be recognized
82. zakim-robot
@zakim-robot
Nov 03 14:59
[johnkmcnabb] @karlgroves The optimistic side of me says that's a great idea. The pessimistic side of me says it could be abused. I used to work in a department where people got movie tickets for getting WOWed. But there was one individual who would solicit WOWs, and it eventually got noticed.

hiya slackers.
87. any suggestions for figure headings.
88. ?
89. a real heading seems odd to me but perhaps it's not?
90. Example:
<???>Figure 1</???>
A nice image caption

91. Peter Krautzberger
@pkra
Nov 03 15:57
Correction:

<???>Figure 1</???> A nice image caption

92. zakim-robot
@zakim-robot
Nov 03 15:58

93. Peter Krautzberger
@pkra
Nov 03 16:05
no. Need to make it heading-like
94. So some markup is warranted :)
95. (need to make it visually heading-like)

[beth] The Wall Street Journal has an article on lawsuits over web accessibility for blind users. The comments following the article are the most ignorant I’ve ever seen. I’d like to give these people a piece of my mind, so I follow the instructions which say “Sign in to comment”, yet when I sign in, is mysteriously can’t load the comments anymore. Sign out, comments appear… sign in… comments not found. Weird, it’s almost as if they don’t want anyone commenting. http://www.wsj.com/articles/companies-face-lawsuits-over-website-accessibility-for-blind-users-1478005201

[marcysutton] They really missed an opportunity to interview Lainey Feingold in that article to represent alternatives to litigation.
102. [marcysutton] Ok I had to stop reading the comments at "When did web access become a "right"?"
103. [marcysutton] sheesh
104. zakim-robot
@zakim-robot
Nov 03 21:37

Nov 03 22:05
[alice] Wow, that first comment spectacularly misses the point
108. [alice] "The disabled in this country have to be the best taken care of in the history of the world -- all 11 million of them that are on Social Security disability."
109. [alice] "This sounds more like some shyster lawyers getting together to sue over something that cannot possibly be a real problem and one that does not have any real remedy." well which is it?
110. [alice] ok stopping
111. [conley] yeah, just don't

117. [marcysutton] nope haven't heard of it

119. [marcysutton] Buying a bike on the internet can be tough unless you're good at putting them together...you end up at a bike shop anyway
120. zakim-robot
@zakim-robot
Nov 03 22:44
[michiel] +it’s better to get them custom made to your specifications.
121. [michiel] Much more comfortable.
122. [michiel] You can still buy the remaining pieces online, but things like frame, fork, and saddle I’d buy at a dealer.
123. [karlgroves] > +it’s better to get them custom made to your specifications.

Feh. Like a Dutchman would know anything about bikes

124. [karlgroves] j/k its for my kid.
125. [michiel] Ah
126. [michiel] I was talking race bikes :P
127. [shawn.henning] PBS News Hour had a nice piece on candidates appealing to the disabled. One of the people they interviewed complained that one candidate just wanted the disabled to live off the government; so the view of that commenter is widely held unfortunately.
128. [michiel] Or are you race bike shopping for your kid?
129. [shawn.henning] It was a nice piece overall though.
