    [lefthandev] Hello all from Scotland.
  2. [lefthandev] Before I go to sleep (it's just past midnight here) - is anyone here in Edinburgh? or will be visiting there on April 12th? If so, you're very welcome to come to our first Accessibility and Inclusive Design meetup. See https://www.meetup.com/Edinburgh-a11y-Meetup/. Good night thumbsup emoji: )

@michiel i feeeeeeel so stupid right now! It was literally my stupid "aria-role" that was making my keyboard events not work, i hadn't had a chance to check back since i posted but removing "aria-role" and just making it "role" fixed all my issues... such a noob i am! stupid stupid... thanks for that catch man you made me so happy!

    [michiel] seanus1138: replace aria-role with role. aria-role doesn’t exist :)

[iandevlin] I have a question. If I have a keyboard accessible calendar widget, any (admittedly short) research has shown me that the Enter key is the one to use for allowing users to select a certain date. However, is it also considered ok to add the same functionality to the space bar? I was showing what I had implemented to a colleague, and he was trying to use the space bar to select a date, and of course the default action is to shoot down the page.

I don't see any harm in adding this functionality, but I just wanted to run it past a few experienced people. Thanks for any inut.

[obyford] Most page elements (buttons, checkboxes, radio buttons) can be interacted with using the space bar, but normally links cannot. So if the thing being triggered feels or looks like a button or form element I would probably allow the space bar as a trigger. If it looked like a link… I’m less sure. I think some users may also use the space bar to scroll the page as you said, is that something they might want to do whilst using the widget?
  8. [obyford] Also, I should probably add - if the ‘thing’ looks like a button it should probably be a button. If you use the most correct element, the correct behaviour will often come for free.

[iandevlin] Hi, thanks for the reply. No, scrolling in this case would be a bit weird I think, and it doesn't look like a link and looks more like a button, but all the calendars I see do not use buttons for the days...it is odd.

[michiel] @seanus1138: happens to the best of us. Plus, making mistakes is a good way to learn (except when using power tools).

[andrewmacpherson] Does anyone know if there is an official MIME-type for .brf files? Asking for Drupal. application/braille has been suggested but I can't find any evidence of it. https://www.drupal.org/node/2720697

[quidkid] hey guys i’m working on a select-esque element(its not a real select but a series of buttons to mimic it) and for accessibility purposes, I want to know what the tab pattern should be. so first you tab onto the select button. when you press enter/downarrow(which one should it be?) it shows the dropdown options. when you press tab/downarrow/uparrow, shifttab(which combo should it be?) you navigate through it. you press enter to actually select it which closes the dropdown and updates the initial placeholder with your selection. Should the focus remain on the select upon that enter press or should it have moved on to the Go button? I hope this makes sense
  13. [quidkid] tl:dr: how do I make a javascript jump menu accessible? i do have a go button

[caesar] @quidkid the expectations for keyboard interaction for select is described in the APG: https://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria-practices/#combobox
  15. [quidkid] thank you @caesar but it’s under draft? im not quite sure what the expectations are or where to find them. I found the deleted section of it by clicking through the issue discussion. im quite confused though at what the pattern is referring to. im not sure if it’s a select. what exactly is a combobox?
  16. [quidkid] ohh i see in the deleted section.. select is like the first definition.. but why is this under draft still? what does this mean in terms of making a select WCAG AA friendly?

[caesar] Oops sorry. I was looking at the section underneath it, hahaha... sorry.

[caesar] So a dropdown select (listbox? combobox?) receives focus on Tab, expanding the options should be "Space" and navigating the elements within should be arrow keys. Pressing Enter makes the selection (and collapses the options)
  19. [caesar] In the native HTML element, pressing Enter on the collapsed element allows the user to make selections using the arrow keys but doesn't expand the options, I think (or that could just be the screen reader going into Virtual PC/forms mode).

[quidkid] @caesar thank you! so because it’s under draft, is there personal freedom is choosing what will work to make it WCAG AA compliant? would the key patterns I suggested be ok too since there is no standard for it yet?

[mgifford] I’m not at CSUN this year, but would think there would be a CSUN channel. that right?
  22. [mgifford] Also, is there a Canada channel? There may be some Canada specific discussions that should take place...
  23. [mgifford] @george_zamfir @dboudreau is there a Canada Channel?
