[INTRO MUSIC] [TITLE] Web Accessibility Perspectives - Clear Layout and Design [before narration:] Web accessibility perspectives
Poor layout can be very frustrating. Show someone in a kitchen – ne is trying to make a cup of coffee but the kettle is in a cupboard, the coffee is the other side of the room and the mugs are somewhere else entirely. [after narration:] A man in a kitchen looking for things to make a coffee.
And the same applies to the web. Good design involves good layout, and that means a better user experience. We see a quick timelapse of the same kitchen being rearranged into a much more sensible arrangement. [after narration:] The man is frustrated about not finding the things.
This includes clear headings, navigation bars, and consistent styling. He puts a label on the coffee, a mug tree, and then neatens everything up. He then settles down at a table with a mug of coffee and a laptop. [after narration:] The man rearranges the kitchen in a time warp.
ANY web user will get frustrated with bad layout and design. He is looking at a pizza website. The website is clearly too complex and he is getting frustrated with the layout. [after narration:] The man is now browsing a bad badly laid out pizza delivery website and shaking his head.
Complex layouts also make finding information difficult or impossible for people with visual disabilities. Cut to someone with low vision looking at exactly the same website, with screen magnification turned on. It is complex and confusing. [after narration:] A woman is using the same complex website with screen magnification. She only sees a portion of the screen at a time, so the website appears even more confusing.
And they are confusing for people with cognitive and learning disabilities, who need clarity and consistency of the presentation. Continued. [after narration:] The woman is shaking her head and unable to use that webite.
Bad design also impacts anyone who isn’t particularly confident around computers. Back to the man from earlier. He is frustrated and calls a friend over to help. The friend looks at the site, perplexed, and types in a new pizza delivery site that is much more clear. [after narration:] The man calls a freind over to help. The friend is as confused and navigates to a different, better pizza website.
Web accessibility: essential for some, useful for all. The visually disabled person takes a bite out of the successfully ordered pizza. [after narration:] This second website is much clearer and easier to use. They are both happy. Also the woman using screen magnification successfully used that website and is delightfully eating a pizza.
