0 [INTRO MUSIC] [TITLE] Web Accessibility Perspectives - Understandable Content [before narration:] Web accessibility perspectives
1 Instead of saying: to postulate a conceit more irksome than being addressed in sesquipedalian syntax is adamantine.
It is better to say: being spoken to in unnecessarily long and complicated language is a pain!
In a kitchen an elderly man with a chef’s hat on is looking at an online recipe on his laptop with his grandchild, who has Down Syndrome. They keep pausing as if to work out whether or not what they’re doing is the right thing. The recipe contains lots of jargony text with no illustrations, headings, and structures to supplement the text.
Every once in a while granddad and grandson looks quizzically at the recipe and picks up a dictionary, looks up a word and carries on.
[after "adamantine":] Two people trying to follow instructions on a cooking website using lots of text with no illustrations or structure.
[after "is a pain":] They are looking up words in a dictionary to understand the recipe.
2 Yet many websites use overly complex language, jargon, and unexplained acronyms. We see they are reading a blog with solid block text with no structure and separation.
3 Or they lack good structure with headings, lists, and separation. We zoom in to see a sentence with long difficult words and unexplained acronyms. [after narration:] They are confused and frustrated by the website.
4 It makes them difficult and unappealing to use for many people, including non-native speakers. And makes them unusable for people with learning and cognitive disabilities. The blog changes. It now has clearly indicated steps, and the text looks more structured and has accompanying photos. [after narration:] They search and find a different cooking website with more structured text and illustrations.
5 Web accessibility: essential for some, useful for all. Cut ahead in time and we see them in a tidy kitchen with a lovely looking cake.
Grandpa and grandchild are proudly looking at the cake and start cutting it and digging in.
[after narration:] They successfully bake a delicous looking cake, and look happy cutting it.
