[sareh] I was wondering what you all thought of Microsoft not supporting IE versions below IE11 from January.
From what I understand, there's still a significant number of people (& a greater number with specific accessibility needs) who still use older IE versions.

IE 11 is supported on Windows 7 and higher right? Is there any AT that doesn't function with lower versions of IE?

I was hoping to dive into the wisdom of this crowd: does it make a difference whether an aria live region is in the original HTML or attached later by JS? I hadn't run into any particular issue but recently I overheard someone saying it would.

[karlgroves] @pkra you may run into problems if you create the live region and its content at the same time. Screen readers often store a snapshot of the DOM in a buffer, and a limited # of things cause a buffer refresh.

@karlgroves thank you! I was aware of that but now I'm wondering: does updating a live region ensure a buffer refresh? Should it? Also, any chance there is a resource out there on which things trigger buffer refresh (for various screenreaders)?

[karlgroves] If the live region is already “registered” then updating it will work fine.

Basically the types of things that cause a buffer refresh are adding/ removing DOM nodes or toggling the display property of a node. (Note, there may be others. I’m def. not an expert in the nuances of screen readers)

@sareh, actually, Microsoft will be supporting IE9 too since Vista is still supported until some time in 2017 and they can only do IE9

It's weird, Microsoft will have no requirement to support 10, but does 9 and 11

[sareh] @powrsurg Thanks for answering. That is really bizarre. Do you know of any stats for people who use older IE versions for accessibility reasons?
  11. powrsurg
    19:24
Sadly I don't ... that might be in the recent WebAIM screen reader survey?
  12. garcialo
    19:24
I think that might be a little too specific for the WebAIM survey
  13. garcialo
    19:25
I know it has browsers/version, but I don't think it mentions that it's specifically done for a11y reasons

    19:26
...although, I guess that could be inferred

    IE9 usage is around 1.5%?
  16. powrsurg
    19:52
For us IE9 is 11.77% of our IE users, the second highest after IE11, or ~ 3.5% of overall users
