@garcialo interesting issues with scope usage: w3c/wcag#127

  3. garcialo
    14:06
    @MichielBijl That technique looks odd.
  4. garcialo
    14:06
Well, the example seems odd when you read the description of it.
  5. garcialo
    14:07
"In the following example, column #1 contains serial numbers for rows in the table and the second column contains the key value for the row." Okay, no problems.
  6. garcialo
    14:07
'The cells in the second column may then use scope="row".' Okay, a little weird, but okay.
  7. garcialo
    14:08
    'The cells in the first row too are marked up with td and use scope="col".' Uh...what? <tr> <td></td> <th scope="col">Name</th> <th scope="col">Phone#</th> <th scope="col">Fax#</th> <th scope="col">City</th> </tr><tr>
  8. MichielBijl
    14:09
    I haven't actually read it 🙈
  9. MichielBijl
    14:09
Just thought of you when I saw the issue.
  10. garcialo
    14:19
Okay, I tested with the example code as described and it works on Firefox with NVDA.
  11. garcialo
    14:26
And actually, the example code as provided seems to work as well.
  12. MichielBijl
    14:31
    =\
  13. garcialo
    14:33
The only data that doesn't have a description for it is the first column because there is isn't a column header for it; and maybe the "row" header only applies to cells below it?
  14. MichielBijl
    14:34
Would have been helpful if they provided a test file.

Thank you. That is messed up in VoiceOver on iOS. I can post results once I'm at @StommePoes' place.
  17. garcialo
    14:44
@MichielBijl No. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I had recently been convinced by a coworker that my belief that TDs could be used as headers was wrong. You have proven me right; the best thing one human can do for another.
  18. MichielBijl
    15:26
    :+1:

also AT use heuristics will often report first cell in col/row as header when interrogated despite lack of header markup, also putting scope on a td exposes as header in acc API in some browsers

    16:14
@garcialo "The core reason to run your HTML documents through a conformance checker is simple: To catch unintended mistakes—mistakes you might have otherwise missed—so that you can fix them." wise words https://validator.w3.org/nu/about.html
  24. garcialo
    16:14
Yeah; when I say TDs could used a headers, I'm kind of meaning specifically as in "It's not a failure under WCAG."
  25. stevefaulkner
    16:15
it came up recently in discussion about a wcag technique
  26. garcialo
    16:16
    Interesting.
  27. stevefaulkner
    16:16
they are updating it to reflect html5 conformance criteria
  28. garcialo
    16:17
    I think that's great. =)
  29. MichielBijl
    21:45
So, @stevefaulkner and @garcialo, will Automated Testing Tool Showdown be a rap battle about #a11y testing tools?
  30. MichielBijl
    21:46
Kind of like the one Jake and Bruce did at Frontiers.
  31. StommePoes
    21:49
That could have been a better battle
  32. StommePoes
    21:49
PPK's not much of a fighter, I found he lost unfairly
  33. MichielBijl
    21:51
    Right, it was against PPK
  34. StommePoes
    21:52
    bruce was the ref
  35. MichielBijl
    21:52
Yeah, he should definitely keep making trance instead of doing rap battles :+
  36. MichielBijl
    21:52
Is it just me or does Bruce always wear a rain thingy
  37. StommePoes
    21:53
    with a pony
  38. StommePoes
    21:53
    or unicorn on it
  39. MichielBijl
    21:53
    It was magnificent
  40. StommePoes
    21:53
nah that was because of the typo walk
  41. StommePoes
    21:53
it was raining and people got ponchos
  42. MichielBijl
    21:54
    It only mieserde
  43. StommePoes
    21:55

  44. StommePoes
    21:55
    @divisiveCotton
  45. garcialo
    22:25
    @MichielBijl No spoilers.
  46. MichielBijl
    22:26
I'll definitely come and watch =)
  47. StommePoes
    23:21
open the window, stick your head out, and yell "I'm mad as hell! And I'm not gonna take this anymore!!" then we'll figure out what to do about inaccessible websites and bullshit frameworks and uncaring devteams
  48. MichielBijl
