[vivdec] Hi all – I’m the UX lead on a project to make a very form-heavy piece of software accessible. We’re currently in the scoping/research phase and have a couple of plugins we need to find accessible solutions for. One in particular is ‘Chosen’. This jquery plugin makes select boxes easy to work with for sighted users but focus bypasses the contents of the list and any items added to a list of results. There is another similar plugin called ‘Select’ but this seems to have the same problems? Have any of you guys come across accessible versions of these types of plugins?

[vivdec] Thanks @jnurthen - that’s a fantastic resource. We’re looking in to it now.

[jv] are os native apps better in accessibility than webapps, in general?
  4. [jv] do people who prefer to use accessible software would prefer native apps over webapps?

@vivdec I know a lot of people were working with the Select team (I think more with Select2) to get it working better with, for example, Dragon
  6. Drupal wanted to be able to use select2 and so were very willing to help out to see if it could be brought up to an a11y standard that Drupal could use it.
  7. @jv it depends. For example almost everyone I know who uses web chats that work with xmpp pipe it to their accessible desktop clients since the web ones tend to kinda suck. One exception apparently is IRCCloud. Whether a native app is accessible or not, just like the web, depends entirely on whether th developers bothered to try to follow the standards for whatever they were building for (there are standards for native controls and apps by each of the OSes)... that doesn't hit everything but when devs try, a lot ends up working.
  8. A bit shocked at the news about AISquared getting bought by the same company that now owns FS and Optelec.

Imagine some investment company bought TPG, Deque, SSBBart, Knowability and SimplyAccessible. Oh and Sina's PAC.

[vivdec] Thanks @stommepoes - I'll dig a bit deeper with Select2. We're really keen to get multi select working as well as the search capability. The Oracle resource shared by @jnurthen seems like it might be our answer. We've customised Chosen quite a bit already so we're weighing up whether to try and make it accessible or replace it all together. I really appreciate your suggestions!

I'm familiar with using Talkback and Voiceover for testing accessibility on mobile for web sites. We're talking about doing some mobile apps. I have done a little bit of mobile app development and my image buttons were at least read out by each mobile screen reader, and I already understand concepts of things like color contrast from my time doing web accessibility. What more do I need to consider for our mobile apps?

anyone ever come across weirdness with JAWS & FF on pages with iframes
  29. I think JAWS is barfing if the iframe is not same-origin but I haven't quite pinned it down yet
