    I would totally make a <longdesc> element because that would be hilarious, but someone would probably try to use it.

    [wesruv] global page zoom settings....
  36. [wesruv] when did this happen??
  37. [wesruv] I was enjoying my high horse with em based breakpoints in CSS!
  38. Mallory
    @StommePoes
    Sep 19 17:37
    Dunno but I've used it since forever
  39. it's why so many web pages still break on me
  40. or have horizonal scrollbars and things cut off. Esp things like Gmail are really terrible

    Has anyone heard of effective magnetic wireless coupling in relation to accessibility?

    [car] @wesruv Since at least Jan 2013 when a bug report was opened stating that it didn't work in Incognito mode. ;)
    https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=171745
  44. [car] Just guessing that was one of the first bugs reported after the feature went in... someone probably really wanted to try zooming in incognito mode... ;)
  45. Mallory
    @StommePoes
    Sep 19 17:57
    someone who uses it exclusively was tired of "open new page. ctrl++. Open new page. ctrl++" etc

    [car] Yep. So anyone with a hankering to incognito-zoom can do so.

    [car] I'm actually curious how well the "Change font size" feature works in most pages, if anyone uses that feature regularly. There's a warning about it on the google support page for the feature: "Note: Some websites don't let browsers change only the text size. For those sites, Chrome won’t be able to adjust the font size." (from https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/96810?hl=en) There's even a "Minimum font size" setting on the "Customize fonts..." dialog.
  52. Mallory
    @StommePoes
    Sep 19 18:18
    Unlike Desktop-level font sizing, I don't know that browsers can override a base font set on the html element
  53. I know if I set my Desktop setting to something huge, everything's huge except I think px fonts. I would have to try again to be sure. Last time I did it was a few Desktops ago and it wasn't consistant accross applications, so I had to turn it back down
  54. meaning, some application buttons would be large as I needed but others would stay too small
  55. It's also hard to use if you have any toolbars on your toolbars on your browser bars, which I did at the time
  56. This gitter page for example
  57. uses px fonts
  58. because designers always know better than users what users need. :(
  59. powrsurg
    @powrsurg
    Sep 19 18:25
    sorry, got pulled away
  60. @car yeah, that was the first I've saw of it. Seems kind of weird
  61. I'm honestly not sure how that relates to anything web related
  62. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    Sep 19 18:48
    [car] @powrsurg I guess they have a hardware category on their web accessibility site. A bit odd...
    The breadcrumb at the top of that link says: Best Practices>Hardware, Telecommunications, and ACS>
  63. [car] @StommePoes If you do try it out, please let us know if it's cool or useless - would be interesting to know whether it's worth recommending to folks.
  64. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    Sep 19 19:17
    [wesruv] @car any font sizes that are not set up in relative units or %s will not be scaled
  65. [wesruv] if you use font-size
  66. [wesruv] that's why I like to only use rem and em with font siziing
  67. [wesruv] seems like most sites use PX nowadays, so it feels like the feature isn't as useful as one might hope
  68. [wesruv] actually researched this for a recent article: https://www.lullabot.com/articles/scaling-css-components-with-bem-rems-ems
  69. [wesruv] if you go to this section: 2 ♡ Works with Accessibility Features

    Sep 19 19:22
    [wesruv] @car @stommepoes looks like there isn't a global zoom setting for Edge or IE
  71. [wesruv] looks like you need to hack on firefox to get it to have a global zoom setting
  72. [wesruv] interesante.
  73. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    Sep 19 19:36
    [wesruv] I take it back! Edge's zoom is only global
  74. [car] They don't have ctrl++?
  75. [wesruv] oh wait, it's weirder than that
  76. [wesruv] they all have Ctrl +, I think
  77. [wesruv] Edge's zoom will effect the tab until it's closed
  78. [wesruv] not sure if you can set default
  79. [wesruv] my google-fu says no

    [jhausler] has anyone noticed that Chrome v53 has bonked previously accessible comboboxes? the same aria doesn’t read anything anymore with VoiceOver.
  81. [jhausler] autocompletes, etc...

    @StommePoes
    Sep 19 20:36
    @car: if you're low-vision enough that you need your applications themselves to be larger, so far as I know that's the only way is by setting it in your window-manager (not browser) settings, or use a screen magnifyer.
  83. That's what I meant by if you have a lot of toolbars, it's not nice
  84. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    Sep 19 20:37
    [car] Ah, ok.
  85. Mallory
    @StommePoes
    Sep 19 20:38
    And yeah text-enlarge-only can't override some designer setting fonts in px. The fact that my team is setting everything in pixels is currently making steam come out my head, because they're basically insisting everyone have tiny-ass text.
  86. Oh and they think everyone has a default of 16px.
  87. I told them otherwise but "people who set different application font sizes" and "kindles" are too rare to care about.
  88. Meh, time to go to bed and let the world do whatever it's going to do anyway.

    [car] Rats! I need to read wesruv's article on [x]em's. Maybe that might help your people. :)
  90. [car] G'nite!
  91. [car] (I meant, "Rats that your people don't care" and not "Rats that you're going to let the world do whatever it's going to do"... :)

    [wesruv] @stommepoes if they're using Grunt or Gulp they can run Post CSS + https://github.com/cuth/postcss-pxtorem
  93. [wesruv] and they won't know the difference
  94. [wesruv] devs get their PX, the world gets REM's
  95. Mallory
    @StommePoes
    Sep 19 20:51
    There's already some rems mixed in from anotehr team
  96. and it causes our Selenium tester to list long lists of possible pixel units
  97. which is why I don't think we should be writing tests that tests "x is so-many px away from y" tests
  98. grrr, I need a focus trap but it's hidden because nobody wants to see it, which breaks WCAG guideline for "visible focus" but I can't use the last-focusable, which is visible, because other things can come along and randomly add/remove content (and focusables) from inside my component.
  99. We really need JS to add some way of just saying "this element is a single context until it is closed"
