[caesar] Is there a resource that lists out how different screen readers treat aria-describedby? i.e. do they read it immediately with the element vs. only if the user requests it?

@caesar - depends on the element with some screen readers

for example JAWS with aria-describedby on an image will read "press Jaws key plus alt plus r to read descriptive text" but for form fields it will read it automatically.

    [caesar] ic, thanks
  5. [caesar] We're looking at it in the context of links (footnote references)

strangely NVDA doesn't seem to be reading them at all at the moment for me (which is really weird as I know I have tested that before)

[caesar] Yeah, a bit fat fail for images for NVDA: http://www.powermapper.com/tests/screen-readers/labelling/img-aria-describedby/

seems like a bogus test. The image needs alt text.

[caesar] Yeah, I also disagree with their success criteria that the aria-describedby info needs to be read out, but I got what I wanted (whether or not the SR reads it with or without user interaction)

It's an important note, because aria-describedby is listed by Apple as an acceptable replacement for longdesc, for example
  11. if aria-describedby worked for all AT (or also without it) and in generally the same way and for images, it could well be.
  12. Since only links are available to all people, I still use links for longdesc. Never actual longdesc attrs.

    [karlgroves] Why
  15. [michiel] Because we got like 5 signups.
  16. [michiel] In other words, as many signups as speakers.
  17. [michiel] On top of that it’s free, so not sure those 5 will show up.

[karlgroves] That sucks. Sorry to hear that
  19. [michiel] Yeah it sucks, really bummed out about it.
  20. [michiel] Ah well, better next time. #brightonside.

[alastc] maybe there is an optimal rhythm? I.e. spread them out a little more? (Not that I've been keeping track, but I see role=drinks pop up quite a lot on twitter)
  22. [michiel] alastc: yeah we try to do it every 3-4 months.
  23. [michiel] But it was in Brighton as opposed to Amsterdam this time.
  24. [alastc] ah
  25. [michiel] So figured it didn’t matter it was closer to the other one.
  26. [alastc] no idea then, I won't slander Brighton's accessibility scene ;)
  27. [michiel] Heh, just blame me getting it together about two weeks in advanced. We normally have most organisational stuff done a couple months in advance.

    [alice] Hey all!
  30. [alice] If any of you are already trying the devtools accessibility experiment I would deeply appreciate your feedback - both things you like and things you find annoying/difficult
