    [michiel] Good morning Slackers :)
  2. [michiel] @robdodson: keep up the good work on the videos <3

[alastc] @karlgroves There is a new success criteria (up for review, still very draft) in WCAG 2.1 for "Resize content" up to 400% without horizontal scrolling. That kinda requires RWD or an alternative. TBH, 200% without horizontal scrolling requires RWD, so with that assumption in place 300/400% isn't harder as it maps to mobile viewport sizes. (There is an exception for UAs that don't allow for reflow when zooming.)

[michiel] should finish his email about image colour contrast.

Looking for a recommendation: Most calendar widgets I've seen tend to lower the contrast for dates that don't belong to that month to create a subtle difference between dates. Often that lower contrast is too low to pass anything. What would one recommend as an alternative? A different bg/color all together?

[tink] If the intention is that people should not or cannot interact with anything other than the current month, the low contrast may not be an issue?
  7. [tink] If that isn't the case, then the off-months would need to meet the minimum contrast, but by less than the on-month.

I'm evaluating our new calendar for an intranet we are going to use. I ran it through aXe and it complained about the calendar on the side and was trying to make recommendations.

[tink] The problem of non-essential content failing contrast, because it's been designed to be unobvious visually, is a tricky one.

It looks like if you have a date at the end of the previous month that shows up on the calendar you can still click on it to interact with it, but it doesn't have a circle around it like it does if that is the current month.

[tink] In which case it really should meet the minimum contrast requirement.
  12. [tink] Would it be difficult for the designer(s) to adjust the contrasts?

One of our more designer-y developers said he finds the color contrast requirement limiting because it prevents you from doing anything subtle. I feel this would be an example of something like that

It's not our product, just something our HR said we were using and I looked at it for stuff like that.

[tink] Or what his definition of subtle is.

My question was more about what should we do if we were to ever do something like that. We're looking to tweak the calendar we use for our clients and I figured we should avoid said issues
  18. The non-current month dates on the calendar were the only color contrast issues for the new intranet, which surprised me. More issues were attributed to a lack of alt text on images.

[tink] Visual design really isn't my thing, but I think it should be possible to convey subtlety whilst still meeting contrast requirements for both types of content.

It is hard. With subtle you usually want things very light/faint. Doing that with enough contrast is hard. I haven't seen many good examples of that.

[tink] No, that doesn't surprise me.

[car] @powrsurg @tink If the lower-contrast dates are in the typical "calendar order" (i.e. week-row and day-column) and if the higher-contrast (current month) dates have a circle around them and the lower-contrast (other month) dates don't, then maybe you could say that "Color is not the only visual means of conveying information"?

Designers have huge, sharp, amazing, flashy new screens. What's subtle the them is invisible to the rest of us.
  25. I would think the colour is merely visually enhacing the fact that those dates are outside the current month, which is provided textually
  26. We've been letting our outside-the-month days be non-interactive, meaning they could be considered disabled controls, however when keyboarding, if you're arrowing on the 31st, you could, by trying to go beyond that, end up bringing yourself to the 1st of the next month... the whole month changes then, however. Same for going backwards.
  27. Not sure if that's the best way to do it, but it's how we've done it so far.
  28. powrsurg
    @powrsurg
    Jan 16 17:19
Right, so then is that actually okay? I mean, I feel like the dates even still being there is a nicety/making it a little easier for devs to program, rather than it being intended desire

[car] I would think that mouse users would complain that the keyboarders have extra functionality that they don't have, and they would want to click on the 1st of the next month and have the month change, too.
  30. powrsurg
    @powrsurg

I feel like hitting a right arrow on the last day of the month should, instead of changing the month, but instead change your focus to the next month button for example

    Ooh, that's also an option.
  32. Makes sense text-wise too.
  33. Any powerpoint geniuses here?
  34. Just wondering if there's a way to make a text placeholder sit on top of another text placeholder. I haven't been able to figure that out yet.

[michiel] #777777 on #FFFFFF is the lightest you can go for normal text.
  38. [michiel] Or #888888 on #FFFFFF if you make it bold.
  39. [michiel] While not the lightest colour, still pretty light.
  40. [michiel] Also, playing with font-size, background colours, etc can create the illusion of subtle.
  41. [michiel] The thing itself shouldn’t have to be subtle, the things around it have to be more prominent.

Funny, I would have thought #777 was low

[michiel] It's pretty low if your body text is #222 or something.
  44. [michiel] Contrast between 777 and 222 is 3.55:1, so that's pretty different if you ask me.
