[juliettepiazza] @caesar @mayabenari @colinjohnston @herin @tink Do you think create a label like "approved by assistive technology users" or " assistive technology - friendly website" could pouch companies to involve more people with disabilities in their testing?

[mayabenari] @juliettepiazza Honestly can’t say. I like the idea of rewarding people for good behavior and practices but on the other hand feel like it should just be the way websites are built and normalized.

There could be other ways to involve people with disabilities in their testing that are more culture-based for the company, i.e. every three weeks a user with a disability will come in and test their product or an internal dashboard celebrating products that have had that testing done. Just some ideas, feel free to test your idea and let us know how it goes!

  4. [mayabenari] Re-asking from yesterday in case it got missed in the shuffle:

Is anyone familiar with Irlen syndrome (or scotopic sensitivity syndrome) which causes blurred or moving text when looking at high contrast?

I’m trying to find out two things:

    1. Is it the same severity for black text on white background and white text on black background?
    2. Is there any standard to how much someone should temper their contrast to alleviate symptoms? Would #222 on white do it — would #111?

[robdodson] hey folks, we just rolled out a new video on :focus-ring, a new CSS selector that was recently standardized. :focus-ring lets you differentiate between mouse and keyboard focus, which is really helpful for situations when you need to split the difference and remove the focus outline for mouse users, but keep it in place for keyboard users. It's meant to address the big problem of sites that just outline: none all the things.

Video includes mention of a few polyfills you can use today to leverage this great new feature. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilj2P5-5CjI&index=1&list=PLNYkxOF6rcICWx0C9LVWWVqvHlYJyqw7g

  6. [robdodson] also i got a sweet new set with way more cats
  7. [conley] Nice, thank for these a11ycasts

[sitaggart] @sri429 @marcysutton @jnurthen I know Microsoft has implemented some form of F6 keyboard shortcut to move between Window Panes in an open application for years. It seems to be a well know thing for our blind employees too. In a similar way it's advised to be used to cycle between open non-modal Dialogs and the background workspace in the ARIA docs, you could hook into that. We plan to.
  13. [marcysutton] interesting, thanks for the info!

[melsumner] Can you make an automatic transition between browse and focus mode (esp w/NVDA)

@sitaggart yes. We use F6 for this in some of our toolkits too. Works well on Windows but not so well on macs..... http://www.oracle.com/webfolder/technetwork/jet/jsdocs/oj.ojPopup.html#keyboard-section

[melsumner] I'm getting stuck in a few places where the user has tabbed through interactive elements but then QA is trying to arrow down through the non-interactive elements and it's getting a little "stuck" - I'm not sure how much of the switching back and forth is required, actually used, etc.
  17. [sitaggart] @jnurthen Mac issues because you need to hold the Fn key to get F6?

    @jnurthen

partly yes. Works ok for a keyboard-only user but something seems to get really confused when I try to move focus to the popup when VO is running. Perhaps it is due to need to use VO to press the F6 button and "focus" not moving to where I expect it to after pressing the button on the touchbar. I should really try it with a real keyboard to see what is up
  19. next time I am in the office I will do so.

[ted_drake] This video from Rob Dodson does a great job of explaining the focus-ring. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilj2P5-5CjI&index=1&list=PLNYkxOF6rcICWx0C9LVWWVqvHlYJyqw7g

[marcysutton] Lots of pushback on :focus-ring on twitter today. Reception seems pretty mixed even though we definitely need a tool for persistent :focus on click. Seems like a case of "you can't please everyone"
  23. [marcysutton] Some users really hate the outline–and I mean really. Ever been on the receiving end of Github issues related to it in a UI framework? While on the flipside, it was pointed out that some users might like the persistent focus style when they click. Except it isn't consistent....and not how default controls behave. Hence the idea that it's a "bug"

Yep - I've given up fighting for highly visible focus indicators for mouse users. By letting UX designers have that one I can get them to agree to have very visible focus indicators for keyboard users. If I insisted on the mouse users having them I would end up with these super subtle indicators which are no use to anyone.

    [marcysutton] exactly.
  26. [marcysutton] In an ideal situation you could make it configurable, and let your users decide. But that is pretty overkill as far as features go if your site doesn't already support personalization

i've got the frameworks which are doing this to have an easy way for people to re-enable focus for mouse users at server level in case a customer insists on it - but i'm betting it never gets used.
  30. .... and now i need to get on with updating our VPAT system to support the new section 508....
