[robdodson] hey folks. I'm planning the next season of a11ycasts. I was wondering if there are any topics you all think I should cover?
  2. [garcialo] Dragon
  3. [garcialo] all Dragon all the time
  4. [robdodson] i can talk about dragons
  5. [robdodson] oh wait do you mean the voice recognition software?

    [garcialo] Both really
  8. [garcialo] Probably best to talk about one, then the other, and then both.

[jpdevries] @robdodson maybe some of the new stuff in WCAG 2.1? I’ve been looking into the new 400% zoom success criteria and doing some research on patterns to support that. I recently discovered that Chrome’s font size preferences do not scale type sized with px, so personally I’m curious if even though yes modern browsers “zoom” px fonts now, if relative units are still needed to meet success criteria.
  10. [robdodson] @jpdevries oh are you talking about the browser setting for zooming fonts?
  11. [robdodson] WCAG 2.1 is a great suggestion, I'll add that to the list.

    [jpdevries] yup! WCAG 2.1 1.4.11 I believe
  13. [jpdevries] and ya, the browser setting for scaling just fonts (not layout too). I’m curious, does anyone know, given that px units won’t respect that setting, would the be considered a violation? Inadvisable?
  14. [robdodson] @jpdevries I'm going to bug the team to see if we have stats data on how many folks use that browser zooming option for mobile chrome
  15. [robdodson] the argument I recently read against it is based on the assumption that most folks would tell the OS to zoom
  16. [robdodson] but I'd love to have some actual data
  17. [jpdevries] that would be great! At Thinkful (coding bootcamp) we’re working on getting some more WCAG <3 in our curricula. I’ll take all I can get.
  18. [jpdevries] > the argument I recently read against it is based on the assumption that most folks would tell the OS to zoom

Ya. And I think that is fair enough. I pat myself on the back sometimes for making a “preferences” page that lets users change stuff like that there, and it uses localStorage to remember their preferences. I think it’s cool. Does anyone use it. I dunno, probably not many.

  19. [garcialo] @jpdevries would personally avoid getting too caught up on 2.1 until a later working draft. Especially in any kind of instruction
  20. [jpdevries] @garcialo ya, good point. i’m sure we have plenty of 2.0 to munch on for a while

[jpdevries] we are looking into using that new Chrome Dev Tools timeline “visualizer” awesomeness as a way to help students visualize the critical rendering path. So :raised_hands: for that
  22. [garcialo] Yup
