    [michiel] car: so I went through that PDF in some more depth with a friend of mine, and it is tagged, but not in the most meaningful way. Pretty much all content is exposed as paragraphs. My mistake was that I tested it with VoiceOver, and VoiceOver doesn’t actually handle tagged PDFs all that well (well, not at all). So yes, it’s tagged, but not effectively.
  2. [michiel] Basically when VoiceOver hits this, it's still going to be read, but just like it would a browser in quirks mode.

    @michiel why are you analysing PDF files in the middle of the night.

    [karlgroves] @jamesn all i can say is that @michiel has a weird sense of fun
  5. [jamesn] @karlgroves yep. That is true. I'm slacking with a beer. But still not analyzing PDF files.
  6. [karlgroves] >I’m slacking with a beer.

    As if there was any other way!

    [alice] Any ARIA wonks still awake?

    May 04 04:46
    [ghanek] @alice, what might one win?
  10. [alice] lol
  11. [alice] one might win me asking questions about the ARIA taxonomy
  12. [ghanek] life is like a box of chocolates...
  13. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 04 04:51
    [alice] ...and the ARIA taxonomy is like a maze of twisty little passage
  14. [ghanek] I may get eaten by a grue, but go ahead and ask.
  15. [alice] https://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria-1.1/#widget_roles includes alert and alertdialog
  16. [alice] however, in the taxonomy, those roles don't inherit from widget
  17. [alice] soooo what's up with that
  18. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 04 05:18
    [ghanek] hmm... the UML class diagram https://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria-1.1/img/rdf_model.svg ties alert and alertdialog to section, not to widget.

    [ghanek] /skritching sound is me fingers on me head
  20. [jamesn] @alice @ghanek the aria taxonomy sounds right to me.
  21. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 04 05:36
    [alice] @jamesn So they aren't widget roles?
  22. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 04 05:43
    [jamesn] Alert is certainly not a widget. Alertdialog could be if you consider window a widget. But window seems correct to me.
  23. [jamesn] Think of widgets in aria being equivalent to form elements (input, select etc) in HTML.

    [alice] Thanks :) I should file a spec bug then

  26. ah - they are in the list of widget roles.... i see now
  27. yeah - i think that would be a bug

    [alice] [as an aside: I feel like the answer to many of my "what's up with the ARIA spec" issues is "Oh yeah Matt King filed a bug for that already. Guy is doing phenomenal work.]

  38. [michiel] jamesn, karlgroves: I was thought that in order to do PDF accessibility you need to be drunk. Hence the time restriction.

    [jiatyan] @spell, not heard of them. But they should probably pause that continuous video, put a skip nav in, and make sure to pick a red which has enough contrast for links.

    Guess the alt text I just found (was in an email) - http://i.imgur.com/o6jvaiu.png
  45. I'll give people 5 minutes
  46. (it was also a link to USPS.com as that is important information to know)

  49. alt="USPS.com home. The profile of an eagle's head adjoining the words United States Postal Service are the two elements that are combined to form the corporate signature."

    I wonder if they realise that if you don't know the history that the logo doesn't really represent what they think it does
  55. .... but they probably don't care about us foreigners
  56. zakim-robot

    May 04 22:33

    [car] Might look a bit like an eagle's head in a wind tunnel... <g>
  58. [car] I was going to guess alt="USPS.com", but I wasn't even close.
