    [deconspray] @quidkid the controls for the Able Player are PNG files. I believe by default, it comes with light and dark variations. You could create custom control images.

    [higley] Has anyone used aria-activedescendant for managing focus in multi-level menus? I’ve tested it with simpler select-like widgets, and seen it used for treeviews (e.g. https://cookiecrook.com/test/aria/tree/ariatree2.html), but I don’t know how well it would read in a nav menu

    Some people at my company are looking at signing up for https://www.elearningguild.com/summits/content/4838/elearning-accessibility-summit-2017-program . I don't recognize any of those names, thought I thought Simply Accessible had shown up in something here

    [conley] Guys, please never do this the way https://www.bostonglobe.com/ has regarding secondary/"mega menu"
  12. [conley] The menu overlay lives within the main nav container and when you click-to-expand (which should be a button, another issue) aria-hidden="true" is applied the main nav container
  13. [conley] making the overlay unusable
  14. [conley] There's much more about it that's wrong but wtf

    Wasn't the Boston Globe heralded a number of years ago for their responsive design? You'd think for spending so much attention to detail in that they wouldn't miss out on a11y issues .

    [quidkid] what exactly is an audio description? i’m googling a lot but so confused. if i have a transcript on the page below the video, do i need an audio description?
  21. luis garcia
    @garcialo
    May 12 19:45
    @quidkid Here is a video with an audio description. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SL7YSqlEd8k
  22. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 12 19:46
    [quidkid] ohhhh
  23. [quidkid] so are audio descriptions now part of WCAG AA compliance?
  24. [quidkid] Note 1: For 1.2.3, 1.2.5, and 1.2.7, if all of the information in the video track is already provided in the audio track, no audio description is necessary.
  25. [quidkid] ^is confusing
  26. luis garcia
    @garcialo
    May 12 19:48
    "Now?" No. They've been for a while.
  27. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 12 19:49
    [quidkid] this is like the same dilemma trying to decide whether a content is decorative or content-only enough.
  28. luis garcia
    @garcialo
    May 12 19:49
    1.2.3 says prerecorded video/audio must have either an audio description or media alternative. 1.2.5 says prerecorded video/audio must have an audio description.
  29. 1.2.3 is A; 1.2.5 is AA
  30. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot

    [quidkid] ahh okeydokey
  31. luis garcia
    @garcialo
    May 12 19:50
    ...at least, that's how I recall it. I will double check
  32. I'm not completely right, but I'm right enough.

    May 12 19:52
    [quidkid] so all the videos on the sites i’ve remediated, having CC and transcript isn’t enough. they also need audio descriptions in order to truly meet wcag aa.. dang should i go back and say something
  34. [quidkid] and for decorative background video, would that need an audio description?
  35. luis garcia
    @garcialo
    May 12 19:53
    Background is not providing content, so no.
  36. ...unless it is providing content, then it's not really background video.
  37. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 12 19:54
    [quidkid] there was also a site with a lot of talking head interviews
  38. luis garcia
    @garcialo
    May 12 19:54
    You don't need to audio describe talking heads
  39. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 12 19:54
    [quidkid] but with b roll?
  40. luis garcia
    @garcialo
    May 12 19:54
    Unless they cut to something that needs to be described.
  41. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 12 19:54
    [quidkid] fudge so is that a yes?
  42. [quidkid] like it cuts to the person doing something
  43. luis garcia
    @garcialo
    May 12 19:55
    Yeah, pretty much.
  44. Well...not necessarily.
  45. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 12 19:55
    [quidkid] lol

    May 12 19:56
    [quidkid] see but what qualifies as all information?
  48. [quidkid] like they will be missing out on the b-roll
  49. luis garcia
    @garcialo
    May 12 19:56
    Something important to the content in context
  50. Depends on what the b-roll is
  51. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 12 19:57
    [quidkid] whose call is it to make these decisions whether it’s content relevant or not
  52. luis garcia
    @garcialo
    May 12 19:57
    The illuminati?
  53. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 12 19:57
    [quidkid] rofl
  54. luis garcia
    @garcialo
    May 12 19:57
    Probably
  55. So it would probably be your call that the content is relevant. But there are a lot of times where it's not needed.
  56. Like in a newscast, they switch to the weather person who is out in the elements. They'll usually give sufficient description of the scene.
  57. Or if there is a talking head, it's not unusual for them to say "this is what's in the video you're about to see" and maybe even discuss some of the details of it.
  58. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 12 20:00
    [quidkid] dang okeydokey.. yeah i guess the b-roll applies like if the guy is talking about working out, the b roll is of him working out. “when I’m working out” and “guy working out” would be redundant
  59. luis garcia
    @garcialo
    May 12 20:01
    Yeah, or it might not be necessary to point that out. Just like it's not necessary to include every single detail of an image in the alt
  60. zakim-robot
    @zakim-robot
    May 12 20:02
    [quidkid] I used to put descriptive alt but after getting back the spot check, they said it would be better to be null. and then for a spotcheck for a very similar website, it will come back saying i should have alt description. so frustrating to figure out the right thing to do
  61. luis garcia
    @garcialo
    May 12 20:03
    Yeah, it's not always very clear.
  62. What is clear though are the signals my stomach is sending.
