[svinkle] > I’m also interested in the “best for the user” answer but I know clients will want to know the “required for compliance” answer
This is kind of everything, isn’t it? (sweat smile emoji)
[ayashi] yeahhhhhhh (sob emoji)
[svinkle]@ayashi I’d say the pause control should be within proximity of the playing video, much like in the same fashion of a pause control for a carousel widget. As far as “compliance,” I’m not sure. I don’t think there’s anything regarding placement, more concerned functionality.
[ayashi] yeah everything just says there has to be a control that allows you to pause
[svinkle] Perhaps the “required for compliance” answer is, “Does the pause control exist and does it work? yes/No.”
[ayashi] but no info about how close it needs to be :) lol
[svinkle] If I were to make a suggestion on placement, the control might be visible in one of the corners of the video, positioned absolutely as to not get in the way too much. When it comes to placement in the DOM, I might put the control above the video, just so folks can get to it faster than if they had to get through any content that may be overtop the video.
[ugi] what do you think about placing an additional “Pause Playback” link at the beginning of the page, and make it the first focusable thing, like a “Skip to Content” link? So that screen reader and keyboard-only users can stop the playback quickly, without having to tab through a bunch of controls.
[svinkle]@ugi Not a bad idea, thought at that point, sighted mouse users would miss the opportunity to pause the video, if so desired. I suppose there wouldn’t be too much harm if there were two buttons to pause with, as long as they updated the state of the other.
[sophieschoice_slack] On Twitter last week there were recommendations given for podcasts on webdesign, usability and accessibility. But I can't seem to find the thread back :( Does anyone hear has some recommendations?
