Hi slackers. Does anyone have tips on exploring SVG structure using screenreaders? I don't mean fancy, JS-enriched things. Just "plain" SVG (with a rich title/desc tree structure) that a user might want to dive into using whatever AT is at their disposal.

Perhaps I should rephrase: does anyone have tips on getting the kind of group-exploration for SVG markup that you get in VoiceOver when using other screenreaders (e.g., nvda, jaws, orca)?

[svinkle] @droidpinkman Damn, nice work! This CSS is slick. Create a PR and let’s get this up on the Patterns page. thumbsup emoji
  5. [svinkle] @pkra Also check out this article featuring a few tips and quirks around SVG and screen readers. :)

thanks, jessica.lovegood. I know that one :) but I'm not looking for authoring tips but for using AT to explore the result. (Though it's arguably connected.)
  8. svinkle what link were you referring to?

So the other day I was taking the edX course on ICT. In it it discussed how companies taking X amount from the US gov't were required by section 503 to have 7% of the work force be covered by people with disabilities. How should one keep records on that for proof of compliance? I feel like having a system or something like that require a user to fill out a form stating a disability may violate some health / privacy laws as well.

[thanks4allthefish] I am working on a reset-password page for one of my clients and was testing it with NVDA and discovered this:
    1) I hover over the New Password text and NVDA reads 'New' as a word
    2) However if I tab to the new password input box NVDA spells out N-e-w

Anyone knows why this would happen?
The text in markup for the label is New password
However while rendering it, via CSS we capitalize it like: NEW PASSWORD
    Could this be a reason?

[karlgroves] @powrsurg that’s something HR would be responsible for. Depending on the size of the company they may already have mechanisms in place in order to respond to EEO surveys
  12. [karlgroves] If your company needs any advice or guidance on this, Tenon does HR consulting too. Generally our HR consulting is around recruiting but also do EEO compliance. Our consultant is PHR/ SHRM-CP certified with almost 20 years experience

Well, my company creates and manages courses in a learning management system. I personally have felt that we should expand a bit to offer HR related functions. I'm also seen as the a11y guy. I'm kinda torn on suggesting we ask for or track that type of info.

[thanks4allthefish] @powrsurg developer here, every job I apply to online asks me to state whether I have a disability with a bunch of options in a dropdown. It is part of EEO compliance

Does that data on individuals need to be encrypted?
  16. Like right now we have a free form tool that an org can make a person joining have to answer any question, but if that is the type of data they may look for I feel we should encrypt that, but I could be wrong on whether that is needed.

[sarahebourne] As part of initiatives to increase hiring of people with disabilities, our state government HR agency collects and tracks data about current employees. This process, however, is dependent on an employee's willingness to "self-identify". Even if you choose to not self-ientify, for privacy reasons for instance, you are still entitled to job accommodations. This means there's not a lot of incentive to self-identify, so they rely strongly on the "pretty please?" approach.

[thanks4allthefish] @sarahebourne did not know this side of things
  19. [seankeegan] @thanks4allthefish I believe ADA prohibits employers from asking questions as to whether or not individual has a disability during pre-offer period. Florida State University police department got hit by this a few years ago by DOJ (and then DOJ required FSU PD to make website and mobile apps accessible per WCAG 2.0, AA). Disability information can be asked as part of post-offer period as well as after person is hired, but not during pre-offer (unless person volunteers information).

  21. [lauraf] @thanks4allthefish Yes, screen readers will sometimes spell out capitalized words. I see this occassionally in table headings in particular

[deconspray] All, the latest WebAIM Screen Reader Survey is available to participate in. Whether you depend on using a screen reader or use it for development or testing purposes, take this survey. Additionally, please help circulate this as widely as possible. The more people that complete this survey, the better informed we'll be about how screen reader/magnifier users do things:
