[adamliptrot] You can use the rotor on iOS - when on the slider you should be able to select an ‘Adjust Value’ option from the rotor (though the default is swipe up/down to adjust, so you probably won’t need to).

[maya] Has anybody worked with defining success metrics for improving accessibility org-wide?

[maya] In other words, how would you measure that your organization is improving in creating accessible products?
  4. [ndxcc] @maya Are you able to find out how many users have accessibility features turned on? If so then you could measure an increase in usage and, probably more crucial, repeat usage. You could also try and recruit accessibility beta testers that can directly feedback on improvements. You’d then have both quantitative data and qualitative feedback.

[maya] >Are you able to find out how many users have accessibility features turned on?
Hmmm… not sure how we’d be able to find this out. How would we know if someone is using their tab key or having a website read to them?
  6. [maya] >You could also try and recruit accessibility beta testers that can directly feedback on improvements.
That’s an interesting thought. The issue is we’re creating new products often, so wondering how we would choose what to test on. I guess it would have to be random?

[maya] Are there any good metrics that show how building accessibly and inclusively is better for business? Something you could show a stakeholder that shows why it's important to spend time on. Sorry if this has been asked before!
  8. [colinoakley] @maya - I've always found it hard to give a solid measure - but talking about the user base and the types of challenges faced by users on non-accessible services is a good way to give some context
  9. [tink] Not really, no.
  10. [tink] It's almost impossible to isolate accessibility as a metric unfortunately.
  11. [tink] But it's logical that if you enable more people to use your product/service, then it'll increase your potential reach/conversion rate/whatever.
  12. [maya] thanks @colinjohnston and @tink, I'll stick with making the case by discussing it logically. I’d still be very curious if anyone has seen something tho.
  13. [herin] @maya : https://www.w3.org/TR/accessibility-metrics-report/#metrics_tool_support
These are proposals. But, nothing exciting
  14. [tink] People have tried over the years, but the accessibility almost always comes as part of a major redesign - where everything from the design through to the platform has been changed at the same time.

[tink] So isolating accessibility as the cause of improvement isn't possible.

[caesar] @maya can you approach it from the risk management and reduction angle?
  17. [colinjohnston] @maya I thunk you mean @colinao
  18. [colinjohnston] @maya I think you mean @colinoakley - but thanks for getting my eyes on this thread :)

[maya] @caesar can you say more about that?
  20. [herin] The metrics need to get more than 3 dimensions... We need to consider Users, Operating systems, User Agents, Assistive technologies, Design, Business process, Service design, success criteria, priority, severity etc. This is gets complex as we introduce more parameters to it.
We could start from what parameters we need to have in scope for each release / iteration.
For example : If you are retrofitting
The use of magnifiers and zooming first as they might affect the design and lead to UI changes
IE + JAWS + Keyboard support and Vision impairment(Blind)
    Colour contrast etc

Then again, the regression can include different business processes each time

  21. [caesar] @maya depending on the legal and regulatory framework of your country, the size of your organisation, the audience and other factors, accessibility efforts may help reduce the risk of the company being sued by people with disabilities (or associated groups).
  22. [herin] Business processes that are widely used and then target the least hit ones

[maya] @caesar yes, we can do that. I was curious about showing how it’s a benefit / rewarding folks / improves your bottom line rather than only talking about how you might be punished if you don’t. thanks for explaining!
  24. [maya] @herin very thorough, thanks!
  25. [caesar] @maya yes, it's definitely more stick than carrot, although in some businesses where "risk" has an associated "cost" this is still considered a benefit.
